Here's a short narrative that is based in Mali.
Making my way from the town, watching the faces past, as I go home. Just staring ahead, making my way through the crowd. I gaze down for a second, and suddenly am hit with something. I look up to see big blue eyes. "Sorry" I mumble feeling ashamed. "Don't worry about it! Besides, if you hadn't run into me, I wouldn't have gotten to see how cute you are. Especially when you blush." He says charmingly. I feel myself get even redder in the face. "Can I walk you back to your house?" He says. "Well, my house is right here." I say, a bit disappointed. "Oh." He says sounded disappointed as well. "Well, if you find yourself back here tonight, stop by at the booth down there." He continued, pointing over to one of the booths right in the heart of the town market. "Alright, well, um, bye" I reply awkwardly. "Wait!" His smooth voice called me back "what's your name?" He asked curiously" Shanti" I replied. "And you?" I asked. "Natin" he replied flashing a perfectly gorgeous smile.
I ran to my family hut trying to conceal my smile until I got to my room. Needless to say, Natin was on my mind for the rest of the day. Putting on my most flattering and bright clothes, and putting up my hair in a different way, I went out to the market to go and find him. I walked in the direction he pointed and set out in the hopes of seeing him.
Approaching where he said he was, I see an empty space. Confused, I ask the merchants in the areas around it. "Natin? Was he about average height with dark hair, and blue eyes?" One of them questions. "Yes!" I say, sounding a bit too excited. "Oh. They left earlier to go back to Egypt." He said. "Oh." I say, feeling tears coming to my eyes. “Egypt?!” I think to myself “It’ll be forever before he’s here again! Well, if he’s even here again.”
I walk as quick as I can, trying to keep my tears in. Once I get to my hut, I just cry and cry. I keep telling myself over and over to stop dreaming, you didn't even know him well enough to feel this way. Even repeating this, I still can't get rid of that magical feeling that makes me smile so intensely, and my stomach do flips.
Days pass, and eventually months too. Throughout the day, I think of Natin and I wonder if he ever thinks of me. "He probably doesn't even remember me" I think to myself one night. I think to myself the perfect scenarios in my mind about seeing him again, but deep down, I know I'm living in a dream. I regret so much not walking with him, and talking with him more. Even though I need to forget, I don't want to.
Months and months pass, and still I've never seen him again, though I keep my hopes up. I feel so empty without him, but I only had one real conversation with him. "Why would he remember me? I'm just ordinary. Plain. Nothing new." Then my mum comes and tells me she needs me to go into town to get some vegetables. After I buy them, I start heading home.
Making my way from the town, watching the faces past, as I go home. Just staring ahead, making my way through the crowd. I gaze down for a second, and suddenly I collide with something. Smiling, with an all too familiar memory in mind, and looking up I find myself face to face with a wall. Disappointed, I walk a little further to my house, but I see someone standing outside my house. Ignoring it, I walk through the door. Suddenly I hear my name called out in a voice that I always replay in my mind. I turn around to be greeted by familiar big blue eyes. "Do you remember me?" He asks sounding hopeful. "I could never forget" I reply with a huge grin on my face.
